What Air Induction Systems Do
Your engine needs to mix oxygen with the fuel it burns to run. An induction system, also called an air intake, draws that oxygen in through an intake manifold, where it's spread among engine cylinders.
How an Air Induction System Works
The process looks like this. First, air enters your engine air filter. The filter removes airborne pollutants such as dirt, debris, and allergens. Air levels then get regulated. (Alternatively, you can relocate your air intake to near a fender or above a wheel well. This makes it what's called a cold air intake. Setting up induction this way enables sucking in cooler and denser air, which can slightly improve engine power.)
How Air Intakes Know How Much Air to Use
Three components ensure induction happens correctly:
- A mass airflow sensor
- An air metering system
- An oxygen sensor (or sensors)
Mass airflow sensors measure air movement. Air metering systems feed back to an engine control unit, or ECU. Oxygen sensors monitor exhaust levels. Together, they help your engine run as well as possible. When one or more air intake parts don't, though, you'll start to see signs of trouble:
- A lit Check Engine light
- Your engine revving too fast (in neutral or when parked)
- Idling issues (usually idling faster or slower than normal)
The first symptom indicates engine performance problems. The last two suggest possible induction system failure.
