OEM Kia Spark Plugs
What Spark Plugs Do
Spark plugs ignite the mixture of fuel and oxygen your engine burns to run. Without them, your Kia couldn't start at all. How they do their job is straightforward. The process is called "spark ignition."
How Spark Ignition Works
Put your key in your ignition lock cylinder and turn it. This triggers your ignition switch. Your car battery, plus several other ignition parts, like an ignition coil, a starter solenoid, and a starter motor, they begin working together to create a small electric charge -- a "spark," for short.
This is where your spark plugs come in. Their leads capture that current and use it to combust the above-mentioned gas and air. Each of your engine pistons then pump, and your crankshaft begins turning. Finally, the many parts of your Kia get moving, and it gets going.
Unfortunately, though, no spark plug lasts forever. If their leads get too rusty or widen too far, they won't be able to pick up charges as well. Engine misfires can result, if not engine failure. Even worse, spark plugs can break. That usually causes serious damage to an engine's cylinders.
When Spark Plugs Need to be Replaced
Luckily, those Kia makes get built to last, for millions of ignitions and for up to 100,000 miles. Just don't exceed the mileage limits recommended in your vehicle's owner's manual. In other words, be sure to change any spark plug before it reaches those limits.
