OEM Kia Radiator Cooling Parts
When your engine runs, it puts out serious heat. Too much, and the engine can overheat and shut down. Coolant (better known as antifreeze) absorbs most of the heat, and your radiator dissipates it. The cooling process is simple.
How Radiators Work
First, antifreeze flows through your radiator hoses -- inlet hoses and outlet hoses, specifically. Your radiator cap pressurizes it as it travels. This helps the antifreeze accumulate as much heat as possible. Flat, fin-style aluminum tubes then expel that heat, and a fan scatters it into the air.
If your radiator has extra fins, they're called turbulators. They help get rid of engine heat even better. If it has tanks mounted on its sides, too, they're known as transmission coolers. These transfer excess heat produced as your transmission runs to the antifreeze instead of dispersing it into the air. This helps your transmission work as well as it can.
Unfortunately, radiators can develop problems, owing to age and use. Luckily, though, there are symptoms you can look for.
Signs a Radiator is Failing or Has Gone Bad
- Unusual engine noise
- The sweet, syrupy odor of ethylene glycol
- Discolored, mucky, or leaking antifreeze
- Unusually high readings on your vehicle's temperature gauge
- Heater and air conditioner malfunctions
Having problems shifting, though? That's potentially a bad transmission cooler.
