All You Need to Know About the Ignition System

The ignition system is what brings your engine to life, generating the spark that starts combustion. For your Kia Sorento, understanding how each ignition part works can help you keep your SUV running smoothly and avoid performance issues down the road.

Key Ignition System Parts in Your Kia Sorento

1. Spark Plugs

These small but essential components ignite the air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinders, and they should be replaced regularly.

2. Ignition Coils

Coils convert battery voltage into the high voltage needed to fire the spark plugs properly.

3. Crankshaft Position Sensor

This sensor tells the engine control unit (ECU) the exact position of the crankshaft to help time the spark accurately.

4. Ignition Switch

Located behind the key or start button, the ignition switch sends the signal to power up your electrical systems and start the engine.

5. Battery

The battery supplies the initial voltage needed to start your vehicle and keep the ignition components functioning.

6. ECU (Engine Control Unit)

The ECU processes sensor data to control ignition timing and ensure efficient engine performance.

7. Wiring Harness

This network of wires connects all ignition components, allowing electricity and data to flow where needed.
